Thermal Analysis

This field describes a group of analytical techniques that measure the physical properties of a material (i.e. heat flow, mass, dimension) as a function of temperature. The analyzers cover all major fields including, polymers, rubbers, chemicals, pharmaceutics, and life sciences.

Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC)

A DSC measures the amount of energy (heat) absorbed or released by a sample as it is heated, cooled or held at a constant (isothermal) temperature. The precise measure of sample temperature is also made with a DSC. The DSC 4000 and 6000 provide a wide range of applications, which include:

  • Material Characterization;

  • Oxidative Induction Testing (OIT);

  • Isothermal Kinetics Studies;

  • UV Curing and Process Simulation in Polymers;

  • Process and product improvement;

  • Polymorph characterization in pharmaceuticals;

  • Process studies in pharmaceuticals effects on amorphous crystalline content.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

A Thermogravimetric Analyzer measures the change in mass of a sample as the sample is heated, cooled or held at a constant (isothermal) temperature. PerkinElmer’s TGA 4000 and 8000 combine excellent atmosphere control, high throughput automation, and advanced hyphenation technology for a full understanding of the gases evolved during heating of a sample. TGA is used to characterize materials used in a variety of environmental applications, including:

  • Food;

  • Pharmaceutics;

  • Petrochemistry.

Simultaneous Thermal Analyzers (STA)

The PerkinElmer® STA 6000 and 8000 provide stable performance with an efficient productivity ranging from QC to R&D applications. With the power to acquire both TGA and DTA/DSC measurements simultaneously, the compact, small instrument delivers high performance thermal analysis across the widest range of applications. To grasp complete moisture and solvent evaporation, the STA can operate from as low as 15 ºC to 1600 C.

Key applications include:

  • Ceramic materials;

  • Construction materials;

  • Geological materials;

  • Oil analysis;

  • Inorganic analysis;

  • High temperature applications.

Mechanical Analysis (DMA and TMA)

TMA 4000 and DMA 8000 represent this area of thermal analysis. TMA 4000 measures dimensional changes such as function of temperature, while DMA 8000 measures changes of rheological behavior under dynamic conditions. These instruments are ideal for the measurement of:

  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (COE);

  • Stiffness;

  • Modulus;
